City Of Caterpillar

It has been seven years since City Of Caterpillar released their seven track self titled EP and I still haven't found a record that can stay so fresh for so long. It's like fucking canned tuna man, this shit keeps forever and still tastes great.

The beauty of COC is that they refuse to patronise the listener. Within the first two minutes of the EP, you are still listening to the first track and are being thrown around the room with chaotic trangression of the song that constantly looks for ways forward instead of resorting back to a chorus.

It is with this quality that by the fourth minute you find yourself lulled into a swaying build up, entranced waiting for a battle.

If I was not so tired and being paid I would evaluate every song, or maybe delve into this one in less detail and give a spare overview. A Heart Filled Reaction To A Dissatisfaction is probably the highlight of the record. The bass line drops in on its own, playing possibly the best bass intro in post punk/hardcore I have heard. Everything else crashes in to join the party but it is the lyrics in this song that truely shine. "Hello, I would like for us to talk but right now is not such a great time", I mean how fucking ironic is that, just before he goes off on one.

And the whole EP predictably goes dips in and out of heavy, slow, heavy, slow but I don't care. It still feels fresh because they do it so well.

So here is to City Of Caterpillar for this EP. I thank you.
